A little bit of Luxbite

A very little post today.  My birthday was last Tuesday and a friend who was at Luxbite picked me up a little pack of sugary goodness (AKA macarons). The macarons can be bought in person or ordered online for pick up (boxed sets only). Individually I think they are $2.50 each, the boxed set of 4 that I was given – the ‘Signature Range’ was $11.

After I wrote this post I spent last night with the best friend trying to make macarons. About 7 batches of failed shells later I’ve officially retracted the comments that would otherwise have been here about how overpriced macarons are. If we ever manage to get them perfect with any sort of consistency I’ll definitely post about it.

Luxbite gets a lot buzz for its macarons and other sweet treats but I’d never gotten around to visiting so I was thought this little 4 pack was a great present. Gerard and I split them down the middle. I was glad that there were only 4 because they took about 30 seconds to eat.

Macarons

The first macaron we had was the watermelon yoghurt. Gerard took this one. The flavour was good but the shells themselves were pretty soggy (maybe because of the filling? It hadn’t sat for all that long, these were eaten within 3 hours of being bought).

I chose the raspberry and white chocolate. This was my favourite. The colour was very, very vibrant. Almost off-puttingly so. The filling was great, tangy and chocolately and a little bit rich. The shells had a couple of air pockets in them but were otherwise pretty good.

Next up was the rose and lychee which Gerard tried. He thought it was ok but it didn’t blow him away.

The last macaron we had was the kaya toast which is filled with Malaysian coconut custard and a slice of Lescure butter. The flavour of the butter set off the custard really well, a great combination. Again the shell was ok but didn’t really do it for me.

All up:
If macarons are your thing you’ll probably love LuxBite. If you enjoy them every now and then but aren’t an obsessive, you’ll probably find that they’re ok but nothing amazing. I’ve definitely been more excited by macarons elsewhere. In general though these have great fillings with so-so shells which combine to create a macaron that is fine, but not earth-shattering.

Hello! We would agree with your review on LuxBite’s macarons. Overrated and overhyped, no?
If you haven’t been, do try La Belle Miette, it converted us to macarons. Also consider Cacao and A La Folie too, for stronger flavours and a lighter, less sugary texture respectively. We blogged about these too. :)

Definitely overrated! I’ve had macarons from Cacao before but actually haven’t been to la belle miette (I know, it’s almost a crime. I dissapointment myself). Prob a little cliche but i think my favourite melb macaron was a salted caramel from earl canteen ages ago, just delicious. Going on your review the la belle miette raspberry and salted caramel are now at the top of my hit list. I think I’m going to have to wait a while though, I’m still all macaroned out after last week’s cooking attempt that involved making about 7 practice batches!
